You’re flying down 395, at the legal speed of 55 mph of course, and in the car next to you is the most adorable Labrador Retriever. It’s got its head out the driver-side window, tongue-wagging, ears flapping, almost laughing with joy. Then it hops back in and sticks his head out the passenger side window, howling with unadulterated amusement and absolute bliss. There is nothing more wonderful than a happy dog. But what many drivers don’t realize is the danger they are putting their furry friends and themselves into when they let their pets roam free while the vehicle is in motion.
According to research done by AAA and Kurgo Pet Products, 65% of people have admitted the following distracting behaviors while driving with their pets:
-Petting their dogs
-Letting their dogs sit in their laps
-Giving food or treats to their dogs
-Playing with their dogs
It’s hard to say no to an animal you love, but as we’ve seen in past posts, anything that takes your attention from the road can be deadly.
When you’re out driving with your pet you should invest in some sort of restraint, whether that be a car kennel that sets up in the trunk of your car or a doggy seatbelt. Both methods are approved for use and can save not only your life but your furry friends as well. For instance, when Fido is out and about, the driver cannot concentrate on both driving well and keeping Fido under control. If you end up getting into an accident your beloved animal could be thrown from the car or killed by airbags deploying, which are fatal to canines.
When researching restraints pick what is best for you and your animal. In a car kennel, the dog, cat, rabbit, etc. can lay down and not be jostled by bumps, but always remember to strap the kennel in. If you look into a seatbelt option, find padded restraints that work within your own seatbelts and keep animals in the backseat of the car.
Car trips for your animals can be a huge threat, but just like you buckle up before putting the car in drive, make sure to give the same consideration to your furry companion!
