After a major snowstorm, a woman slipped on black ice in a shopping center parking lot while walking to a store. Snow had been piled throughout the lot, and melting and refreezing created icy conditions across a crosswalk.
She suffered a severe ankle fracture that required surgery, followed by complications including an infection that led to additional procedures and extended treatment.
Evidence showed the property managers and contractors failed to address the hazardous conditions after the storm, including not relocating snow piles or treating areas where refreezing was expected. The case settled shortly before trial.
