A driver on I-66 suddenly stopped in the left lane and tried to make an illegal U-turn in a restricted area. A husband and wife traveling behind him swerved to avoid a crash. Their vehicle flipped in the median and landed on its side.
There was no contact between the vehicles, but the impact was severe. The husband suffered a concussion, brain bleed, and multiple fractures but recovered after several months of treatment. The wife suffered a spinal fracture and continues to have difficulty walking.
The at-fault driver carried only minimal insurance, but the couple’s own underinsured motorist coverage helped provide additional protection.
