Be Our Valentine-Safety is the Best Gift

Although you may be planning to give your Valentine a dozen roses or box of chocolate, safety behind the wheel is hands down the best gift you can give this Valentine’s Day. Below is our  “Valentines Special” featuring several of our best suggestions for driving safety.

V-Very Attentive: When driving, walking, riding a bike, or using any other mode of transportation, it is important to be attentive to your surroundings and constantly scanning for potential dangers.

A-Attitude: It is important to approach the road with a good attitude; road rage is not only unpleasant for you and your passengers but also dangerous.

L-Lane Changes: Before changing lanes, remember to check your blind spots, turn on your turn signal, and make sure there is an opening in traffic large enough for your vehicle.

E-Engine: When was the last time you had your vehicle serviced? You cannot approach the road safely if your vehicle is not running properly.

N-No Tolerance Policy: Do not allow yourself or your loved ones to drive impaired by alcohol or drugs. A $20 cab is worth the cost every time.

T-Technology: Although some technologies have created great improvements in safety, such as back up cameras and lane placement sensors, most technologies act as a distraction on the road. Stow your cellphone and set your GPS before hitting the road so you can better enjoy your Valentine’s company.

I-Insurance: Sure, you hope you never need to use it, but you and your loved ones will sleep better at night knowing you have adequate coverage for your vehicle, home, and health. (Feel free to contact us for a quick review and explanation of your auto policy coverages)

N-Nighttime Driving: Remember to turn your lights on from dusk to dawn, pay extra attention for wildlife that may enter the roadway, and only drive if you are awake enough for the task.

E-Ears: Not only is it illegal to drive with headphones in your ears but it is also a huge distraction. Your ears allow you to hear sirens of emergency vehicles, horns of cars, and any new noises your vehicle may be making that could be a sign of disrepair.

S-Stopping: Rear-ending accidents are some of the most common in Virginia. Remember to pay close attention to the vehicle ahead of you and scan the horizon for traffic or stoplights so you can prepare to stop with the flow of traffic. My father, a professional truck driver his entire working life, trained me to keep a “space cushion” between you and the car ahead and behind.
